Guernsey Shoebox Charity Appeal Needs Your Help
Guernsey Shoebox Charity Appeal Needs Your Help
Local charity Aid Reaching Children says it can’t thank everyone enough for all the boxes it has received so far – but still needs a number of essentials to help refugees.
“I really can’t thank everyone enough for all the boxes we’ve received and are still receiving some absolutely beautiful stuff donated,” said charity founder Linda Garnham (pictured with fellow charity workers Josh and Sarah) on its Facebook page. “We promise you that this stuff will get to the refugees that need it the most.”
The charity is still looking for other items, though, including children’s socks, blankets, shampoo, nappies and wipes.
“If you feel that you could help in any way by buying something off of our wish list so that we could finish some more boxes off we would be so grateful,” said the charity on its Facebook page.
In order to store items, Aid Reaching Children has taken a storage unit at 7dayselfstore – which we have been able to provide at a discount. The plan is for the charity to take the items to help refugees in Germany.
You can find out what essentials the charity is appealing for on its wishlist on Amazon by clicking here. Please check out their Facebook page, by clicking here.

As a local and new Guernsey business, we aim to provide leading customer service, quality and value – and we really do appreciate everyone’s support. With your help, we have also raised hundreds of pounds for charity this year and are currently working with Guernsey charity organiser Sarah Griffith and her team at GuernseyBridge2Calais to help the refugees in Calais. We’ve donated a unit to allow them to collect and sort out donations of clothing and other essentials before they head over to France. You can find out more by clicking hereThank You! Generous Guernsey Responds To Refugee Crisis – Here’s How You Can Help
Huge response to appeal already – and you can help by dropping donations of clothing and other essentials to help refugees in Calais to 7dayselfstore in the Pitronnerie Road industrial estate in St Peter Port at set times.
We have all seen the pictures and news stories about the refugee crisis on our doorstep, and we at 7dayselfstore.com – as a locally based community-focused business – felt we should do our bit to help.
So, we have donated a unit to charity organiser Sarah Griffith and her team at GuernseyBridge2Calais for the next 8 weeks so they can collect and sort out donations.
Donation drop-off times
We have already seen a huge response to the appeal, with donations coming in thick and fast to our self store thanks to generous islanders and families dropping off amazing amount of things during the first drop-off time.
“I just don’t like to see anybody cold and wet, and in distress. It is just nice to help people,” said one person.
To assist the appeal, we have organised specific times to drop off donations between 5 and 6pm on Saturday and Sundays before Sarah and her team head off to Calais on 9 November.
There is also an additional one-off drop-off tonight (Wednesday 9 September 2015) between 5pm and 6pm.
7dayselfstore is based on the Pitronnerie Road industrial estate in St Peter Port. We are behind Target Targets and next to Sidlocks. We also have plenty of parking.

What is needed?
Sarah Griffith explained that sleeping bags, tents, clean and warm clothing – such as jackets – were among the items desperately needed by refugees.
Here’s a list of other essentials and useful information (click on the image to expand):
She also thanked 7dayselfstore for working with her, saying: “I needed a store. I am thrilled, I am really grateful.” Of course, 7dayselfstore is proud to be part of this Guernsey charity effort.

6 Awesome Things To Do In Guernsey This August Bank Holiday Weekend 2015
6 Awesome Things To Do In Guernsey This August Bank Holiday Weekend
Here are great ideas for what to do on the late bank holiday weekend for the whole family from outdoor cinema to caveman exploration, music and more on Saturday 29, Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August.
Outdoor cinema at Cobo
If you love movies, head down to the Sure Big Screen at Cobo. Lots of great films are being shown in the great outdoors – including movies for children, big kids and classics.
On Saturday, Planes 2: Fire & Rescue (PG) is being shown at 2.30pm followed by What We Did On Our Holiday (12A) at 5.15pm and then the Oscar-winning The Theory of Everything (12) at 7.30pm.
On Sunday, fans of Frozen (PG) will love the sing-a-long showing at 11am. Paddington the movie (PG) is up at 12.45pm. And then it’s The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (PG) at 7.30pm.
On Bank Holiday Monday, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (PG) will show at 2.30pm. The Wizard of Oz (PG) will be showing at 5.15pm and then the classic The Italian Job (1969) (PG) at 7.30pm.
For more information, click here.
Caveman exploration
Okay, so this kinda cool. Have a look around Guernsey’s ancient monuments. Experts and volunteers from Guernsey museums will be on hand at each of the selected dolmens on Saturday, Sunday (no archaeologists) and Monday afternoon.
Interested, meet at La Déhus from 2pm on Saturday. On Sunday, it’s a walking tour covering Le Creux es Fai’es and Le Trépied – just meet at Lihou carpark for a 2pm start. On Monday meet at La Varde from 2pm.
Children can complete a Fete des Dolmens passport by picking up a stamp and answering questions in the 3 different locations. Pop your card into Candie or hand it to an archaeologist on the last day – you could win a Guernsey Museums goody bag. The passport will be available to download from the museums website soon. Click here for more information.
Clear out at home – and putting things into storage!!!
The long bank holiday weekend is the ideal opportunity to do all those jobs you might have not had time to do.
And if you’re having a general tidy-up or clear-out, you may find that you need somewhere to store your treasured possessions – especially with autumn just over the horizon.
That’s where 7dayselfstore.com can help. With modern, secure and 24-hour keypad access, extra-height units start from under £10 a week, plus there’s no deposit and no price rises for 12 months.

£500 raised at 7dayselfstore charity fun day
Thank You! £500 raised at 7dayselfstore’s charity fun day.
Hundreds of you came along and helped us raise money for CLIC Sargent Guernsey Fundraising Branch and Amherst Primary School PTA on Sunday. It was a brilliant day with loads of children and parents, friends and family enjoying the treasure hunt, bouncy castle, Herbie rides, live music, stalls and big raffle plus the cakes, burgers and hot dogs. Not even the rain could stop the fun as we were able to simply move inside. John Randall from Radio Guernsey compered the charity raffle, which included a top prize of two return flights to Southampton thanks to Blue Islands. The tally for our two chosen charities stands at £511.83 as of today!- Blue Islands
