Liberation Day Remembered

71 years ago, the German occupation of Guernsey came to an end on Wednesday 9 May 1945. The day became known as Liberation Day and has has been marked by events and commemorations ever since.

The Germany High Command had unconditionally surrendered on Monday 7 May 1945, with locally stationed Germany officers formally confirming to the Guernsey authorities that the war was over the following day.

After five years of occupation since June 1940, copies of the unconditional surrender document were signed at a little after 7am onboard HMS Bulldog which sat just off St Peter Port on Wednesday 9 May of that year.

7. A stitch in time

Guernsey’s equivalent to the Bayeux Tapestry, the Guernsey bailiwick millennium tapestry illustrates 1,000 years of history in 10 embroidered panels. You can join the team in making a tapestry to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of Toilers of the Sea, the novel by Victor Huge which was dedicated to Guernsey. Passion for landscape photography Ben says: “I’ve been a practising photographer now for 6 years, got my A-Level and BA Hons in the subject. My passion lies within landscape photography. I love capturing an aesthetically pleasing image, to which we would only see in a spectacular moment of time. “Approaching a landscape, I am prepared in advance with the direction of sun, tide and of course – batteries.” “When looking to frame part of the landscape, I am very aware of creating a natural vignette, making the frame enclosed with organic qualities. “Depth is something I am very conscious of, having a defining foreground, middle ground and background, creates great dimension to the image.” “Creating the dimension to the image can be emphasised in post production. Whilst my friends watch football on the TV, I prefer to be on Lightroom 5, playing around – highlights versus shadows.” “Within post production, I will be adjusting the crop, the colours, and defining the subject matter.” “I feel like I’m a “detail’aholic”. Shooting at optimum settings and making sure my exposure is spot on with the histogram and a light meter, allows me to retain detail and make my images as sharp as possible. “I feel like this is necessary as most of my landscape revolves around contrasty rocks where detail can be accentuated. I wish to carry on shooting landscape on this island and everywhere I travel to. Every shot is different due to variable natural elements such as the sea and sky. It also gets me off Lightroom for a few hours.”

Bridge2Calais Final Drop Off Sessions For Clothing And Essentials To Help Refugees

Guernsey charity publishes final list of essentials it needs before final drop off sessions at 7dayselfstore ahead of taking donations to help refugees in Calais.

Bridge2Calais organiser Sarah Griffith has also appealed for volunteers to pack vans before they set off from Guernsey for the French port of Calais, where many refugees are living, on 9 November.

Here at 7dayselfstore, we decided to donate a unit to the team to do our bit to help so they can collect and sort out donations.

But there’s only a few days left before the last drop-off session at 7dayselfstore on the Pitronnerie Road industrial estate in St Peter Port, Guernsey, for clothing and other essentials requested by Bridge2Calais team.

Final donation drop-off times

Wednesday 4 November – 10am – 12noon
Friday 6 November – 3 – 5pm
Saturday 7 November – 3-5pm
Bridge 2 Calais has also appealed for as many as volunteers as possible to load up the vans between 10am and 1pm on Sunday 8 November.
